Musically Unorthodox Manifesto: 5 things we believe about creative careers

1. Creative careers should be accessible

Creative careers can often feel limited or restricted altogether to individuals from marginalised demographics and backgrounds. Soci-economic background, race, education level and lack of formal training are just a few of the many barriers young people face when trying to access creative opportunities, leading to a self-taught, independent route that makes it undoubtedly harder to enter professional networks

Musically Unorthodox seeks to create pathways into the creative industries for those who feel they don’t have any through traditional means. The Profile Builder talent development programme, for aspiring creatives between 16-25 currently not in education, employment or training (NEET), offers formal training and skill development specifically for music and creative industries. The 6 week, full-time programme aims to provide individuals with practical skills and knowledge through teaching and practical learning, arming them with the confidence and skillset needed to access their desired industry.

2. Creative careers are valid career pathways

In today’s social and economic climate, creative opportunities may not seem like the most reliable to pursue. Often low-paying at entry-level and limited, young people may not see them as secure and seek other career avenues to sustain a living, despite having the skills and desire.

Although understandable, MU believes that individuals should still aspire to creative careers as they are needed to keep these industries alive. There’s a number of opportunities, internships and development programmes targeted towards young people, seeking to get them involved in the creative industries not just through one-of schemes, but also into employment.

Have a look at some available opportunities here.

3. Creative Careers need collaboration

Musically Unorthodox seeks to bridge the gap between industry professionals and aspiring creatives. The annual Musically Unorthodox Summit achieves this by creating a shared space where stakeholders, leaders in industry, educators sit down with young creatives, not just to perform lectures, but to discuss the reasons for the rising youth unemployment and crime numbers, and how creative opportunities can deter.

Taking place 17th April 2026, the most recent summit saw representatives from Northants Police, alternative educations providers, BBC 1Xtra and Mixtape Madness share space and invaluable insights with the young people who make up their audiences. Attendees left the summit with insights into the creative industries, networks and industry knowledge.

4. Creative Careers Can Aid Personal Growth

Not only does Musically Unorthodox seek to create career pathways into professional industries, we also want individuals coming through the programmes to develop their personal skills. Throughout the course of the programmes, individuals take the skills and knowledge learnt and apply them. They are given the reins to produce something that showcases what they’ve learnt as well as their own interests.

Giving participants the chance to produce their own work showcasing what they’ve learnt and putting their knowledge into practice allows them to trust their instincts and build their confidence both professionally and personally. Musically Unorthodox proves that individuals do not have to be limited by their backgrounds and/or past experiences and equips participants with the self assurance needed to excel and navigate through the creative world.

5. We need Creative Careers

The current state of the world is having a profound effect on all industries, and creative industries are not exempt. As stated before, creativity can often be financially unreliable and yield very little reward for a long time, which understandable sparks reservations for young people thinking to pursue them in this day and age.

However, there’s arguably a greater need for young people going to the creative scene. The world needs creativity to tell the stories of our generation and introduce new perspectives into a world that is constantly changing and evolving.

Musically Unorthodox seeks to go against the misconceptions holding young creatives back from pursuing their dreams and help build a bridge into the vibrant world of music and media.
