JME: Building Success on Your Own Terms

Growing up in Tottenham, North London, JME (Jamie Adenuga) immersed himself in music from an early age. Alongside his brother Skepta, he began producing tracks, performing on pirate radio, and engaging with the underground grime community. These early experiences taught him to rely on creativity, initiative, and resourcefulness.

Staying Independent

Instead of signing to a major label, JME co-founded Boy Better Know (BBK), giving him full control over his music, events, and brand. Independence became a guiding principle, allowing him to make creative decisions on his own terms. He emphasises that staying true to your values and vision is more important than chasing fame. This mindset illustrates how building a career in music is not just about recognition, but about freedom, consistency, and long-term impact.

Making His Mark on Grime

JME’s early work helped define grime as a genre. By participating in pirate radio sets, releasing mixtapes, and collaborating with peers, he earned credibility within the scene. His success demonstrates that influence is not only about chart positions but it’s about authenticity, contribution, and the ability to inspire others. For aspiring artists in UK rap and grime, his story highlights that carving your own path and defining your own success is not just possible, but rewarding.
